Yankees vs Red Sox Feels Like Baseball Is Finally Back
Baseball fans needed something to feel like the world was back to normal. Nothing says back to normal like the Yankees and Red Sox. The rivalry of old might be a thing of the past but the two teams always bring a sense of excitement when they play.
Arguably one of the best rivalries in sports, they don’t need bench-clearing brawls to stay entertaining. The back and forth between the two teams is what keeps the rivalry alive. One of the other, if not both, is involved in the hunt for the World Series and at any given time they spoil each other’s season. Now the 2020 baseball season is finally upon us and the two rivals will meet for the first time.
Yankees
Despite the postponement of games due to the coronavirus involving the Marlins, who played the Phillies, and were scheduled to play the Yankees. With those games being pushed back, they’d still have their matchups with the Orioles after their 2 games to 1 defeat of the Nationals.
More MLB: Red Sox – Bats Come Alive Opening Day
The bats came alive for the Yanks winning both games against the O’s 9-3 and 8-6 extending their streak of 18 straight games over Baltimore off a 3-run homer by Aaron Judge. Pitching has been a little shaky lately but never to the point of games getting out of hand. The team has kicked off its 2020 season with a 4-1 winning record.
Red Sox
Struggling to get back on the horse after a few off seasons, the Red Sox are trying to shake off the rust. 2020 hasn’t been kind to them starting under .500 on the season with a 3-4 record. They bounced back after losing 2 games to the Mets, splitting the series 2-2. Pitching is still the wild card of their season. Even in their first win against the Mets, they edged them out in a 6-5 game that allowed 15 hits.
It’s safe to say that the Red Sox will need to rely heavily on their bats down the stretch. With pitching being so much of a question mark, fans can expect plenty of games that come down to 1 or 2 run heroics. If pitchers can keep the games at least close and bats can come up in the clutch, the season won’t be this much of a struggle.
In a 60 game shortened season, the Yankees and Red Sox won’t face off as much as they do in a regular-season but maybe that’s just what they need. With so many divisional games, their matchups in the middle of the season get stale. The season starts and early games are about bragging rights. At the end of the season, they’re fighting for a playoff spot or to play spoiler to the other. With 18-20+ games each season against each other, the middle gets kind of boring. Hopefully, in a shorter season, there’s the sweet spot where all the games mean something and keep the momentum going.
The Yankees face the Red Sox in New York with the starting time scheduled for 7:05 EST.
