Zombieland Double Tap Puts Other Zombie Movies To Shame
If you’ve seen the 2009 Zombieland you’ll have a good idea of what to expect from the sequel. That’s a very big endorsement, seeing as the first film in the franchise was one of the best original comedies of the last two decades. While not as innovative as the 2009 cult classic, Zombieland Double Tap is still the perfect follow-up.
When Zombieland came out in 2009, it instantly became a favorite among horror and comedy fans. The perfect blend of both genres (perhaps more on the comedy side), this was a fresh take on the zombie craze. Double Tap is more of the same, highlighted by some great new cast additions and zombies.
Zombieland Double Tap, brings back all of the cast from the original. Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) Wichita (Emma Stone) and Tallahasse (Woody Harrelson), the gang is all here. The characters don’t change much, perhaps except for Little Rock who’s gone from little girl to adult since we last saw her.
Added to the cast are Zoey Deutch (Madison), who plays a ditzy blonde. Rosario Dawson (Nevada), a tough, no nonsense gal, Luke Wilson (Albuquerque) and Thomaa Middleditch (Flasgstaff), the exact human replicas of Tallahasee and Columbus. All of the additions added a fresh new take on the film from the original.
The comedy of the 2009 film was one of its major selling points. Fans of that will be happy to know the sequel doesn’t disappoint in the comedy realm. There are a lot of humorous and clever moments, especially with Madison, who almost becomes cringeworthy with her clueless nature. Like the original, the main cast plays off of each other well.
The main focus are the zombies. However, the theme of home not as a place but a feeling sent a really nice message There’s also a family dynamic in this too, as Columbus, Wichita, Tallahassee, and Little Rock go through some growing pains throughout the film.
To be honest, there weren’t many issues I found with Double Tap. Some will argue that the story is very vanilla, although, you shouldn’t go into this film thinking it’s a Academy Award winner. For what it needed to be, Double Tap succeeded. As just a popcorn flick that will let you release for 100 minutes, you can’t go wrong.
One thing I noticed about Double Tap, there seemed to be a lot more blood and gore. Maybe it’s because I’ve not seen the 2009 original in quite some time, but it was nice to see the sequel really make good use of that R rating. The extra amount of violence is usually just a gimmick for some movies, yet it felt right at home here.
If you were a fan of Zombieland, you’re going to love Zombieland Double Tap. It contains a lot of the same humor and zombie killing action. This one won’t be as big of a cult classic like the 2009 film, however it’s good enough that you’ll want to watch it a few more times.
Also, stay tuned for a special post-credit scene with everyone’s favorite Ghostbuster.
